Is Spending Too Much Time on Social Media Stopping You from Having a Successful Business?

What does it mean when you hate social media but you know that you need it for a successful business? What do you do when you love social media a little bit too much and it becomes addictive? We’ll talk about these and more in this blog.

The Positive of Social Media as a CEO

Through social media, you can use some of the data collected to give you an insight behind why such information is sucking people in. If people find so much education and love consuming the content, you can use those for market research.

However, it is important to manage your time well as a business owner. Building a successful and profitable business comes down to giving yourself more time away from your phone. This will help you consume less constant thoughts of the business and open your mind up to creating new and innovative ideas or solutions to your problems.

Why CEOs Should Not Constantly Think Social Media

There’s an irony here. When you’re not constantly thinking about business, you’re able to step back and get that bird’s eye point of view and find solutions that you maybe wouldn’t have thought of if you were in the thick of it.

Workaholism is definitely a real situation and a lot of my clients are experiencing it, too. So, you’re not alone, if you are feeling it right now.

Tips to Manage Your Time on Social Media

As a business owner myself, I want to share my recommendations:

1 - Check how much you spend on each app.

You can find this under Settings in most phones. Check your activity and ask yourself how much time do you really need to be spending on these platforms. Ideally, all we have to spend is 20-30 minutes a day.

In social media, it really doesn't matter how many people you're reaching, it's not about views. It is about if you have a solid business, where you are communicating in the DMs with potential clients, and having real conversations with referral partners, podcasters, etc.

2 - Do not be consumed too much by insights and analytics.

While insights and analytics are very helpful, checking on them without a focused goal will lead you to spend most of your time throughout the day for only that. What happens is that seeing these numbers can be addictive and can be a dopamine hit. If you suddenly become viral, you’ll only just constantly try to reach those numbers. This will send you into a complete spiral.

Try to redirect that energy to more important tasks to building a successful business.

3 - Set up timers on each app.

You can actually set a daily time limit on Instagram. It will notify you when you’ve reached that time limit. Once you get that notification, put your phone down.

Easier said than done, right? This is especially challenging when you’re in the middle of something and what to get it done right away. Again, you can try setting the timers.

4 - Be self-aware.

In my opinion, to be a good business owner is to be more self-aware. We need to think about how we’re impacting people, about our time, and think of all things on a larger scale.

If you don’t catch yourself right away, it’s okay. Give yourself grace. The second you become self-aware, disengage.

5 - Use the Do Not Disturb setting on your phone.

If you really need to have contacts reach you at any time, you can allow their numbers to come through. You might have to explain your schedule so that other people will know why you are unreachable.

Every Situation is Different

While I do recommend the above, I understand that every single scenario is different. Don’t hesitate to DM me so we can talk about it.

If you need further details on each step and how I apply it on my own business, listen to the full episode here.
